Anamosa Prison

Come visit us at North American Goldwing Forum.

We have lots of tech information, manuals for every make of Goldwing, DIY cargo trailers and lot lots more.

Donna and I woke up this morning and decided to head out to Anamosa, Iowa to take photos of the prison and to see the National Motorcycle Museum. We grabbed the Garmin Nuvi, and entered our destination. The Garmin routed us up Highway 38 north and then onto Interstate 80 west. Beings we were going for the scenery, we changed the Garmin to not include interstates, and we were off.

The GPS was showing only 47 miles to Anamosa. This would be a nice easy trip.

The first site that I found interesting was this small cemetary in the middle of no where. It was located between Moscow Iowa and Tipton Iowa. My plan was to stop and phograph some of the old stone. My plan was aborted when there was no rode leading into the cemetary off of the highway. Instead, Donna took this shot from the road.

Some of the scenery you will see in Iowa can be beautiful. Donna was the official photo taker. Here are a few of the photos she took bewtween Tipton Iowa and Anamosa Iowa.

We arrived in Anamosa after doing a little extra site seeing. To our supprise there was alot of other motorcycles there. Anamosa isn't the biggest town. We knew it was home to the National Motorcycle Museum, but assumed we would be the only ones there because of the small size of the town.

We both decided against going into the Museum for now. I am planning to get my brother to go there with us, and didn't want to ruin myself by seeing it before him. Here are a few shots we took of the Musem from across the street.

After grabbing a few shots of the Museum, we headed down the street to find the prison. Now, you would think finding a HUGE prison in a small town would be quite easy, but it wasn't. We actually drove around for probably 20 minutes until I saw a old looking pedestal through the trees. I told Donna that it looked like a neat old building, so we headed toward it. Guess what ?, it was the prison. When we topped the hill, this is what we saw.

This prison is georgeous to say the least. The stone, the brick work, the pillars, everything was maticulously done. I can only imagine what it tool to make such a grand building. The front of the prison is absolutely massive. To try to describe it is impossible. I will jst post the pictures and let you see for yourselves.

Donna and I stayed around for about 1/2 hour and then decided to head back for home. Shortly after leaving Anamosa we saw a rare site, even for Iowa. A railroad crossing on a gravel road is not so strange, but one with crossing arms is.... I guess you see something new everyday.

So thats it. We spent about 4 hours total on the drive including stops. It was a beautiful day and a great little trip with the one I love and my Goldwing. What more could I want.
